The History of the iPod in 5 simple steps:
First Generation iPods : the most significant innovation, when compared to other MP3 players was Apples use of the scroll wheel. The simple naviagation features and a reasonably large 5GB hard drives made this one of the must have devices of the decade. Later additions included an increase in storage capacity to 10GB.
Second Generation iPods : Apple’s next step in their march towards world domination was to provide iTunes and iPod compatability with Microsfot Windows. This second gen device also featured a 20GB hard drive and some much needed addons such cases and remote controls.
3rd Generation iPods : Apple’s next step was to give the iPod a new, sexy streamlined look. The thin case saw the scroll wheel replaced with a new touch wheel.
4th Generation iPods : Apple goes monochrome - but only on the iPod’s screen. More importantly, the 4th gen devices could now be charged via USB and Apple launched the click wheel on an unsuspecting public.
In between the major iteration of the iPod, Apple decided to get funky. A new range of colour iPods hit the market. The 65k colour display meant that users could view images and photo’s in, not quite, full technicolor beauty!
5th Generation iPods : this version came with a few minor tweaks including new software such as a calendar, memo app, screen lock and stopwatch. In addition to these nice to have features, Apple managed to reduce the drive noise on the iPod.
IPod mini : Now we’re getting sexy! With a smaller chassis and the introduction of micro-drive storage, the iPod min made it’s predecessors look bloated and old. The updated design was aimed at a newer, younger market and the sucess of the mini proved Steve Jobs and co. had hit the mark once more.
The iPod shuffle was probably the first device to really drive the use of flash memory. The lack of a screen was a serious let down for many users but I think we can say that the sound quality on the Shuffle more than made up for this.
One of the most recent releases, the iPod nano addressed the major flaw found on the Shuffle by including a colour display. Other features included World Clock, memo, calendar and Screen Lock.
I’m not saying the Appled iPod is the greatest media player in the world but it has to rank near the top of the pile. Unlike many other MP3 manufacturers, Apple have continued to innovate. Listening to what the masses want hasn’t always been one of Apple’s strong points but in the case of the iPod… the success of this MP3 player says it all.
